The quiet comeback of the high-score arcade game

There's something ancient and pure about a high score. No story, no unlocks that matter, just you versus your last attempt. Mobile has become the natural home for this, and I'm glad the format never really died.

Games like 40 Burning Hot and Neon Drift Circuit both tap into it in different ways — one through pattern matching, one through the perfect drift line. Both give you that 'I can do better' itch the second a run ends.

The magic ingredient is a short round length. A great high-score game respects that you might only have ninety seconds, and it makes those ninety seconds count. When each run is quick, failure stings less and you just start again.

If you've drifted toward big cinematic games, try going back to a pure arcade loop for a week. It's a nice reset for the brain.
